An old and respected resident of Masterton, Mrs Kate Yates, widow of the late Mr George Yates, passed away at the Masterton Hospital on Monday morning after a very brief illness.
The late Mrs Yates, who was in her 72nd year, had resided practically the whole of her lifetime in Masterton, having made the journey over the Rimutakas in a bullock dray some 69 years ago with her parents, the late Mr Thomas and Mrs Harriet Hill. She led a quiet domestic life, and was held in the highest esteem by all with whom she came in contact. In her young days she was a noted horsewoman.
The late Mrs Yates is survived by three sons - Messrs. H G and W B Yates (Masterton), and Mr F P (Jack) Yates (Martinborough), and one daughter, Mrs A O'Callaghan (Masterton). There are also eight grandchildren. One son, the late Mr C V Yates, died some five years ago. Her husband predeceased her about seven years ago.
