Alfred served in Egypt and Gallopili where he was wounded 28 April 1915. That would have been during a very big attack by Turkish troops which started on the 27th. but which was eventually beaten off. Alfred would have been one of the "lucky" ones to be evacuated. After admission to hospital in Cairo he was invalided to NZ per SS "Tahiti" on 2 August 1915 - as the record shows "for a change".
Alfred was discharged from the Army 8 March 1916 as "medically unfit although fit for employment in civil life".3
