CRASH OF P-400 AIRACOBRA

BETWEEN COOKTOWN AND MAREEBA

A USAAF P-400 Airacobra of the 35th Fighter Squadron of the 8th Fighter Group piloted by 1st Lieutenant John R. Casey, Jr., went missing between Cooktown and Mareeba on 25 February 1943. Believed lost in the thick jungle between Cooktown and Mareeba.

1st Lt. Casey, from California, had earlier moved to New Guinea in April 1942 and fought the Japs throughout the May 1942 tour.
