Fifteen concrete air raid shelters were constructed in Flinders Street, Townsville during WW2 to protect the citizens of Townsville during possible Japanese air raids. These air raid shelters became known as "Hanlon's Hideouts". Their construction was warranted as the Japanese carried out three bombing raids against Townsville.
