SS ADMIRAL HALSTEAD
BOMBED IN DARWIN HARBOUR, NORTHERN TERRITORY
ON 19 FEBRUARY 1942

Peter Robinson's father left the Bass Strait ferry Taroona and joined the American merchant vessel, SS Admiral Halstead in 1942. He was on board that ship in Darwin Harbour when the Japanese came in on their first bombing raid on Darwin on 19 February 1942. Peter's father was eventually invalided out of the Merchant Navy with a busted leg in 1944.

Barbara Adams' father, Frederick John Hyde, served on the SS Admiral Halstead when it was bombed in Darwin on 19 February 1942. He was an English man living in Australia and for some reason not known to Barbara he served with the Americans. He passed away in 1963.
