Japanese scouting submarine I-2, under the command of Commander Hiroshi Inada, sank the Dutch merchant ship, Parigi, of 1,172 tons, off Freemantle at 8.03 pm on 1 March 1942.

Submarine I-2, was a member of the 2nd Submarine Squadron, under Rear Admiral Yamazaki Shigeteru. I-2 and other scouting submarines I-1, I-3, I-4, and I-6 and flagship I-7 left Staring Bay in Sulawesi on 22/23 February 1942.

I-1, I-2 and I-3 formed the 7th Division of the 2nd Submarine squadron. They headed for Australian waters while the others were to patrol the Indian Ocean.
