The Civil Construction Corps (CCC) had two camps at Oonoonba in Townsville during WW2. One was in Ireland Street, behind Collins's home at 77 Ireland Street. Gavin Chase stated that the other CCC Camp was located in the Recreation Reserve opposite his parents home which was the Oonoonba School residence. His father was the headmaster of the school.

Men recruited from the south were camped in this location. They were mechanics, fitters, and turners, carpenters, etc. They repaired military trucks and heavy machinery at the CCC Camp.

Dances for soldiers and CCC Men were held in the CCC Hall behind Collins's home at 77 Ireland Street.
