Four anti-aircraft guns were installed on Hummock Hill at Whyalla in South Australia during WW2 to provide protection to the BHP steel mill, loading jetty and shipyards. Four anti-aircraft guns and a command and signals post were located on Hummock Hill.

The early parts of the defence infrastructure was built by BHP workers. The 26th Heavy Anti-aircraft Battery under the command of Captain R.L. Moorfoot completed the majority of the work to establish the battery. At full strength there were 120 men on site.

During the 1986 South Australian Jubilee Royal Visit, BHP developed Hummock Hill with recreational facilities and handed it over to the Whyalla City Council to celebrate BHP's centenary year. The restored Anti-aircraft site has a 3.7" and a Bofors gun. The facility has a small bunker down the cliff from it, which is usually referred to as an observation bunker.
