The infamous Australian Bush Ranger, Ned Kelly was imprisoned and then hung in the Old Melbourne Gaol in 1880. The bluestone buildings of the prison were officially closed in 1924. It was reopened temporarily during WW2 for use as a Military Detention barracks to imprison offending allied servicemen. Today it is open to the public as a tourist and educational penal museum covering Australia's early criminal history.
