CRASH OF A LIBERATOR
AT FENTON, NT
ON 6 SEPTEMBER 1944

RAAF, B-24J Liberator, A72-39, (#44-40653), of 24 Squadron blew a tyre on landing at Fenton airfield in the Northern Territory after a sea search. The Liberator swung violently to port. The force of this sudden movement collapsed the port landing-gear and the B-24 ended up in a ditch. There were no injuries to Flight Lieutenant Parson's crew but the aircraft was written off. It was sent to 4 Repair and Salvage Unit (4 RSU) at Pell airfield, north of Fenton, for conversion to components.

The nose section of this aircraft is now on display at the Darwin Aviation Museum.
