CRASH OF A P-39 AIRACOBRA
AT BANKSTOWN, NSW
26 OCTOBER 1942

At 1030 hrs on the 26 October 1942, RAAF P-39 Airacobra, A53-5, # 41-7164 of 24 Squadron RAAF, crashed landed after an apparent engine failure one mile west of Bankstown airfield. The aircraft was totally destroyed. The pilot was Flying Officer H.C. Nette who was killed in this tragic accident.
F/O Nette was taking part in a non-operational practice air combat exercise at the time of the accident.
