On 13 April 1943, RAAF Kittyhawks A29-173 (#42-10205) and A29-181 (#42-10232) from No. 2 Operational Training Unit (2 OTU) based at Mildura collided over New South Wales at about 0900 hrs E.S.T..
21 Year old Sergeant Robert Harry Overmyer (32700) in Kittyhawk A29-173 was killed in this accident. Sergeant R.R. Munro in A29-181 survived this accident but was killed at Laverton on 27 April 1943 in an aircraft accident.
While formation flying near Mildura they changed over from Vic to Echelon and aircraft A29-173 came underneath aircraft A29-181 and collided with it. It appeared to stall, then dived to the ground and immediately burst into flames. The cause of the accident was deemed to be an error of judgement by the pilot of A29-173.
A short time earlier, another aircraft from this same flight of aircraft crashed at Yarrara, in Victoria killing the pilot, 23 year old Sgt. Frank Howard Ellis (417167).
