B-17E Flying Fortress

USAAF B-17E Flying Fortress #41-9012 of the 30th Bomb Squadron of the 19th Bombardment Group was damaged by fire at Mareeba airfield on 5 November 1942.

On 4 November 1942, B-17E Flying Fortress #41-9012 took off from Port Moresby at 05:00 hours for an armed recon of Buna-Salamaua-Lae areas, and returned to Port Moresby at 11:10 hours. It took off that evening at 17:45 hours and landed at Mareeba airfield at 20:55 hours. RAAF Pilot Officer Allan Fairfax, on Lt John Frost's crew, navigated B-17Flying Fortress #41-9012 back to Mareeba airfield on 4 November 1942.

B-17E #41-9012 burned to the ground the next day while testing a faulty generator or starter motor.

They had earlier attacked a convoy near Gasmata on 2 November 1942.

This photo was taken by Charles Montgomery Jr, an armourer for the 93rd Bomb Squadron.
The photo was kindly sent to Damian Waters by his son 'Chuck' Montgomery.
