On 15 February 1944, a training aircraft swerved wildly off the the runway at Iron Range in far north Queensland and ran into personnel on the flight line. Lieutenant Marion Hawke of the 7th Fighter Squadron of the 49th Fighter Group was killed instantly as the result of a crushed skull. He was returning to New Guinea from 2 weeks leave.
