The US Military established a Telephone Exchange on the 6th Floor of the AMP Building in Queens Street Brisbane during WW2. The AMP building was the General Headquarters, South West Pacific Area (GHQ SWPA) for General Douglas MacArthur, and his senior staff.
The Telephone Exchange was known as AMP Exchange. It was manned by female civilian switchboard operators. Jean Hughes and Shirley O'Neil were two of the operators in AMP Exchange.
