The US Military established a Telephone Exchange inside the original Lennons Hotel, in George Street, Brisbane during WW2. Lennons Hotel was the official accommodation for General Douglas MacArthur, and his senior staff as well as his wife and son. Lennons Hotel was given the code-name of "Bataan" by MacArthur and the Telephone Exchange became known as "Bataan" Exchange. It was manned by female civilian switchboard operators.
