On 24 January 1942, the Australian Legation in Washington sent a cablegram to the Department of External Affairs in Canberra in which it stated that:_

"United States Intelligence state that they have reliable information that the Axis are taking steps to place in Australia agents of Spanish nationality equipped with short-wave wireless sets. These agents woudl be on the staffs of Spanish Consulates. It is expected that these agents will attempt to pass through the United States and a close watch is being kept for them here."

A closer examination was made of all Spanish Diplomatic staff after receipt of this cablegram, but the extent of most Axis espionage in Australia did not come to light until well after WW2.
